Italian has two ways to say joke, scherzo (n.) scherzare (v.) means a practical joke or a trick, while barzelletta (n.) or battuta (n.) means a funny story.
For example:
Sto scherzando - I'm joking around
or
Dimmi una barzelletta - Tell me a joke
