The 1953 Romantic Comedy Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert has become one of my favorite movies since I've been in Rome. I saw it for the first time eight years ago as required material before my first trip to Rome with my grandmother but had not watched in again since than until a few months ago.
The movie follows a young rebellious princess, Ann (Hepburn), who escapes her stately duties for twenty-four hours and finds herself in the company of hansom American Joe Bradley (Peck), who is, unbeknownst to the princess, a reporter. The two spend the day fulfilling all the dreams the princess has of ordinary life and is able to enjoy due to her position including sitting in a sidewalk cafe, wreaking havoc on a Roman market with a Vespa and dancing the night away by the Tiber.
Hepburn, appearing in her first film for the big screen, won an Academy Award for best actress, the film was nominated for Best Picture (it lost to From Here to Eternity) and Albert was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (he lost to Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity).
